The institution would depend directly on the Pope, but would not have the pastoral and magisterial attributes of a personal prelature, such as Opus Dei enjoys, according to the report Thursday in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos has began a series of discussions in Germany and Switzerland with Bernard Falley, head of the Society of St. Pius X, a priestly fraternity of Lefebvre sympathizers.

The cardinal is president of the “Ecclesia Dei” Pontifical Commission, responsible for relations with the faithful of the St. Pius X group who wish to return to full communion with the Holy See.

Possible solutions are being analyzed in order to overcome the 1988 schism, according to the AICA Catholic news agency.
