Pope Francis has confirmed Msgr. Guido Marini in his position as Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations, according to Vatican Radio.
Msgr. Marini, 49, was appointed to the position of ‘Papal MC’ in 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI. In 2008, he organized the January 13 liturgical celebration in which the Pope celebrated Mass ad orientem for the first time in 30 years.
In a 2010 talk, Msgr. Marini called for a “reform of the reform” of the liturgy. In the same address, he expressed the need for priests in particular to “speak about the spirit of the liturgy”, adding that “there is an urgent need to reaffirm the ‘authentic’ spirit of the liturgy”. He also said that priests had a “decisive role” in bringing about a “new liturgical reform”.
At the beginning of last year’s conclave, Msgr. Marini called out the command “Extra omnes” (Everybody out) and closed the chapel doors once the outsiders had left the Sistine Chapel. The assembled cardinals were then free to vote for a new pope.
