Argentine military personnel stationed in Antarctica received a surprising morning call on the eve of Easter Sunday.

According to Il Sismografo, Pope Francis called the “Vicecomodoro Marambio” military base on April 4th at 7:15 a.m.

Petty Officer Gabriel Almada said that the Holy Father sent Easter greetings to the personnel stationed at the base as well as their families.

“I can’t describe the emotion that I experienced,” Almada says. The officer said that he could not “hold back tears of joy” when he realized that the Pope was on the other line.

“It was an experience that will remain in my memory forever,” he added.

Located 60 miles from Esperanza, the Marambio base is one 13 Argentine bases in Antarctica.
