Pope Francis concluded the official events on his Saturday schedule with a meeting with refugees from Syria and Iraq, held near the site of Jesus’ baptism.
The Holy Father listened to the dramatic stories of those who’ve fled the various conflicts of the Middle East. A Syrian Muslim refugee from Homs and an Iraqi Christian refugee recounted their testimonies to the Pope.
Francis also met with some 350 people with disabilities from nearly two dozen local hospitals and care centers, including several children.
After the meeting with Francis, a meal was given to everyone who had participated.
Already in August of last year, the United Nations reported that Jordan was hosting a half million Syrian refugees, with the numbers continuing to increase.
As of March 2013, Jordan was hosting nearly 30,000 Iraqi refugees, the majority of whom are from Baghdad.
