Pope Francis met this morning with Perry Gladstone Christie, the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.

Shortly after his meeting with the Holy Father, Prime Minister Christie met with Vatican Secretary of State, Archbishop Pietro Parolin, as well as Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.

According to a communique by the Holy See, both the themes of emigration and the contributions of the Church to the Bahamian population was discussed, “especially in the sectors of welfare and education.”

“The Parties expressed their hope for closer collaboration in these fields,” the communique stated.

Prime Minister Christie presented the Holy Father with two coffee-table books: one called ‘Love and Responsibility’ – a collection of art from the Bahamas – and another celebrating 40 years of independence.

The Holy Father, still suffering a little from a cold he contracted last week, gave the Prime Minister a small bronze relief of St. Peter.

Archbishop Parolin’s meeting with the Prime Minister was his first appointment as Secretary of State after a delayed start due to a surgical procedure.
