Margaret Archer to Succeed Mary Ann Glendon

Margaret Archer has been appointed as president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences by Pope Francis.

A member of the Academy since its inception in 1994, she succeeds Harvard Law professor Mary Ann Glendon who has served as president since 2004.

Archer is a professor at l’Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne, Switzerland, having previously been a professor of sociology at the University of Warwick.

One of her most notable works, “Realist Social Theory: The Morphogenetic Approach”, was published 1995. 

She is also a former president of the International Sociological Association.
