“May the memory of the sufferings of the Second World War help us to preserve peace,” the Holy Father said in Polish after reciting the Angelus with pilgrims at midday today.

The Pope recalled that the Nazi invasion of Poland — 63 years ago, on Sept. 1, 1939 — opened the way for the war.

“Let us pray, so that the memory of so many sufferings and of all the people who endured them may help us to preserve the peace and may there never again be war,” the Pontiff said.
