Pope Francis sent a message of condolence to Alejandro Jaime Mejia, brother Cardinal Jorge Maria Mejia. Cardinal Mejia, who served as archivist and librarian emeritus of the Holy Roman Church, died today at the age of 91.

Cardinal Mejia, who hailed from Argentina, was a friend of the Pope for many years. Shortly after his election, Pope Francis visited the Cardinal at a Roman hospital after he had suffered a heart attack.

In his telegram the Pope recalled Cardinal Mejia’s commitment to the Church, saying that he dedicated many “long years of service with fidelity and competence to various bodies of the Holy See”,

“I assure my prayers for him, to whom I was joined in a long friendship, so that the Lord may grant peace to him who demonstrated such intense and generous commitment to the Church,” the Pope said.

Concluding his message, Pope Francis expressed his condolences for “a Pastor devoted to the evangelizing mission.” I beg for divine consolation in these moments of suffering, for you and for those loved ones who mourn his passing, to whom I impart the comfort of my heartfelt apostolic blessing”, the Pope wrote.
