Francis “Deeply Distressed” Over Deaths of Children

Pope Francis has sent his condolences on the deaths of children killed in a bus accident in Colombia.

Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, sent a telegram on the Pontiff’s behalf to the archbishop of Santa Marta, Msgr. Ugo Eugenio Puccini Banfi, which expressed Francis’ sympathy for the victims of a tragic accident.

The crash claimed the lives of 33 young children who burned inside a bus, in the Colombian city of Fundacion, on Sunday.

The Pope, “profoundly saddened, expresses his closeness and affection to all those affected by this regrettable event,” and “offers fervent prayers to God for the eternal repose of the souls of the departed,” the telegram read.

“United with those who weep for this tragedy,” it added, “he wishes to convey his heartfelt condolences to the relatives of the deceased and his consolation to the survivors, along with his hope that they make a swift and full recovery.” (D.C.L.)
