“Today more than ever we are united by the ecumenism of blood, which further encourages us on the path towards peace and reconciliation.” Pope Francis made this statement in a message he sent to Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria on Sunday, to mark two years since the Coptic Patriarch’s visit to the Holy See.

In the Pope’s message, Francis discusses the present suffering of Christians in many parts of the world, particularly the persecution of the Coptic Christians, whom Pope Tawadros leads.

The Holy Father also assured the Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark of his unceasing prayers for the Christian community in Egypt and throughout the Middle East, and promised to remember the recent martyrdom of Coptic Christians in a special way. (D.C.L.)
