Pope Francis sent a message today to Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who underwent surgery to remove a blood clot near her brain.
Doctors discovered the subdural haematoma, or bleeding between the brain and the skull, after the Head of State complained of headaches. The two hour procedure went well and doctors have stated that President de Kirchner would need a month to recover from the surgery.
In his letter, the Holy Father ensured de Kirchner of his prayers for “the full restoration” of her health.
“Through these words, I ask that you be aware of my presence. I assure my prayers and closeness,” the Pope wrote.
“I ask the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Lujan, to bestow strength upon you, to keep your hopes high and to ensure that you can once again return to your daily responsibilities. I also remember your relatives, in these harsh circumstances, as well as the attending medical staff, and ask the Lord to cast His light upon their decisions.”
Although President de Kirchner and the Holy Father have had their share of disagreements during his time as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, the two have kept in touch, exchanging several cordial messages since the beginning of his pontificate.
