Pope Francis has insisted on various occasions during his pontificate on the importance of the Sacrament of Confession. This Friday, he is set to preside over a penitential celebration in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Last year, the Pope presided over the celebration, leaving one of the most touching imagesof his papacy. Before making his way to the area where he would hear confessions, the Holy Father approached a confessional, kneeled and confessed.

On Friday’s celebration, the 78 year old Pontiff will once again hear confessions in St. Peter’s, along with the Major Penitentiary, Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, along with the other ordinary and extraordinary Minor Penitiaries of the four papal basilicas. In total, there will be more than 50 confessors.

The penitential celebration will kick off, as it did last year, the initiative by the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization entitled “24 Hours For the Lord.” The event will take place across parishes in Rome and around the world in which the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Eucharistic Adoration will be available for the faithful.
