Pope Francis on Tuesday appointed Society of Divine Word Father Emmanuel Fianu as bishop of Ho, Ghana.

Emmanuel Fianu was born in Tegbi, Ghana, in 1957, and gave his perpetual vows in the congregation of the Society of Divine Word in 1984. He was ordained a priest in 1985. 

He studied biblical theology at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome, and has served in a number of administrative and academic offices.

He is currently secretary of the General Council of his Congregation. 

He succeeds Bishop Francis Anani Kofi Lodonu, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese, upon reaching the age limit, was accepted by the Holy Father.

The Diocese of Ho has a population of about 659,000 with some 200,000 Catholics. They are served by around 80 priests and 90 religious.

South Korea

On the same day, the Pope appointed Father Benedictus Son Hee-Song as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Seoul.

He joins three other auxiliaries in assisting Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung.

Benedictus Son Hee-Song was born in Kyenki Yeonchenun Chadari, Korea, and was ordained a priest in 1986. He studied theology in Innsbruck, Austria, obtaining a licentiate and doctorate.

The Archdiocese of Seoul has a population of more than 10 million, with about 1.5 million Catholics. They are served by about 900 priests and 2,200 religious.
