Prime Minister Victor Ponta of Romania Meets With Pope Francis

Pope Francis met with Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Saturday at the Vatican Apostolic Palace.

According to the Holy See, Prime Minister Ponta conveyed greetings to the Pope on behalf of Romanian Orthodox Patriarch Daniel. Several themes were discussed by the Holy Father and the Romanian Prime Minister, including the family, education and religious freedom.

“In considering the potential of the Catholic Church for contributing to the common good of society as a whole, other open questions were discussed regarding the Catholic community in Romania,” a communique from the Vatican stated.

Before concluding their meeting, Pope Francis and Prime Minister Ponta discussed the current international climate and both emphasised the need for peace and dialogue.

After their meeting, the Romanian Prime Minister met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States. (J.A.E.)
