Rabbi Thanks Pope for Support in Wake of Desecration

ROME, JULY 22, 2002 (Zenit.org).- The Synagogue of Rome held a prayer of reparation for last week’s desecration of tombs in the cemetery of Verano. The chief rabbi of Rome thanked the Pope for his support.

The prayer was open to the public. “Our doors are open to all those who wish to express their solidarity and closeness to us,” said Chief Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni.

He expressed the “gratitude of all the Jewish community” to John Paul II for his support and sympathy for the affected families, and for the papal condemnation of the “ignoble act.” The Pope’s sentiments were expressed in a telegram published Friday by L’Osservatore Romano.
