Archbishop Michael Neary of Tuam, Ireland announced today the death of his predecessor, Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Cassidy.

The retired archbishop of Tuam passed away last night.

Archbishop Cassidy was born on October 29, 1933 in Charlestown, County Mayo. Ordained a priest on June 21, 1959 for the Achonry Diocese, he served as a teacher — then later president – of St. Joseph’s College in Garbally between 1959-1979. He was ordained coadjutor bishop of Clonfert in 1979, then as bishop in 1982.

In 1987 he was made archbishop of Tuam where he served until his retirement in 1995. He was replaced by the current Archbishop Michael Neary.

In 1995 he took up the role of parish priest of Moore until he retired from the position in 2009.
