MADRID, Spain, APR. 9, 2001 (Zenit.org).- The Spanish bishops´ conference denied a news report which said it was thinking of excommunicating ETA terrorists.

“This does not mean that the Spanish bishops are indifferent to the tragedy of terrorism,” said an official statement published today by the conference´s executive committee explained Monday.

The bishops´ statement said a report Sunday by the Madrid newspaper El Mundo “is not in keeping with truth,” and that the bishops´ conference has no competence to impose such a sanction, or “any other canonical penalty,” which corresponds only to the Pope and to each bishop within his own diocese.
