ROME, NOV. 17, 2003 (Zenit.org).- The Catholic bishops of Turkey expressed their solidarity to the Jewish community after last Saturday's terrorist attacks against two synagogues in Istanbul that left 24 dead, including six Jews.
Monsignor Georges Marovitch revealed that the Turkish episcopal conference "has sent a message of sympathy and solidarity to Issak Haleva, Grand Rabbi of Turkey, and to Muammer Gueler, governor of Istanbul."
In their message to the rabbi, the bishops said they were "overwhelmed by sorrow and condemn the dreadful act of violence and terror."
Churchgoers of every confession and rite were recollected in prayer on Sunday and visited nearby synagogues, AsiaNews agency reported.
