La Crosse Bishop Raymond Burke sent letters to the lawmakers as the first step in efforts to get them to change their pattern of voting, which he noted contradicts the Church’s teachings on abortion and other life issues, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported today.

On Tuesday, John Paul II appointed Bishop Burke to serve as the archbishop of St. Louis.

Bishop Burke declined to name the three lawmakers who received the letters.
