United Nations: Pope Francis to Address General Assembly on September 25th

Visit Coincides with the 70th Anniversary of the Institution’s Founding

Pope Francis will address the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York on September 25th, during his visit to the United States for the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. His visit will also coincide with the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.

The date of the Holy Father’s address was confirmed in a press released by the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon. According to the press releasing, the secretary general said that he “is confident that His Holiness Pope Francis’ visit will inspire the international community to redouble its efforts to achieve human dignity for all through ensuring greater social justice, tolerance and understanding among all of the world’s peoples.”

Francis visit to the UN comes 50 years after the address given by Blessed Paul VI, the first Pope to visit the international institution on October 4th, 1965. Thirty years later, St. John Paul also addressed the assembly. Finally, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI visited and addressed the UN on April 18th, 2008.
