The proposal was presented in Ravello, Italy, by Archbishop John Foley, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, during a meeting of the directors of Italian State Radio and Television (RAI) on “Spirituality in Movies and Television.”
Proposing the example of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who was able to see the face of Christ even in the most difficult circumstances, “especially in the poor, the abandoned and the forgotten,” the U.S. archbishop said that there is much “good news, stories that remain to be told and taken to the screen.”
“These programs and productions can give people hope, offer inspiration, and direct in spiritual growth,” the archbishop added. “For those who think only in material terms, productions that lead to reflection might change lives; for those who think frequently in religious terms, they might enrich their spiritual life.”
“Great movie and television productions do not preach; they are an occasion for everyone to arrive at understanding the purpose of life and to identify with those who are seeking to know themselves,” Archbishop Foley concluded.
