The Vatican Museums reported today that the Vatican Museums will remain open until 11p.m. on Friday, July 24. The last visitors will be admitted at 9:30 p.m.

“Visitors will be able to enjoy the sight of the sunset over St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens from the Courtyard of the Cuirasses and from the windows of the Gallery of Maps,” the statement noted. “They will also have access to the Rooms of Raphael and to the Sistine Chapel, and be able to wander through the galleries of the Vatican Apostolic Library in the twilight.”

Tickets must be purchased in advance, and there is a booking fee of 4 euro ($5.64), in addition to the admission fee of 14 euro ($19.76). A reduced fee of 8-euro ($11.24) is available for children and young adults 6-18 years old, and students 26 and under who present an International Student Card on the day of the visit. Children under 6 years old enter free.

Museums all over Europe opened at night last month for the “European Museums Night.”

The idea, according to the French Culture Ministry, who organized the project, is to “shed new light on [Europe’s] historical heritage” by offering “unexpected, surprising and deeply moving” ways of visiting museums.
