A Venezuelan bishop has expressed concern amidst increasing violent acts in the country. Chaos continues to mount as opposition against the government of President Nicolas Maduro has continued to lead to clashes with police forces.
Bishop Luis Armando Tineo Rivera of Carora called for all parties in the conflict to concentrate on seeking the common good through peaceful means rather than violence, particularly as Holy Week approaches.
“This means that dialogue assumes, of course, respect and mutual acceptance between each of the parties, and thus the will to reach agreements,” Bishop Tineo stated in a note sent to Fides News Agency.
Facing pressure to establish peace by the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), President Maduro agreed Tuesday to meet with opposition leaders to begin negotiations. Foreign ministers of the member countries of UNASUR also met with the embattled Venezuelan president.
Maduro expressed his hope that negotiations with the opposition will be considered a “great message of peace, a great sign for all the people to end violence.” (J.A.E.)
