Over the last few weeks, Archbishop Ncube has been demonized by the state-run Chronicle newspaper for exposing government wrongdoings.
The council, which describes the archbishop as a “good shepherd,” said it appreciates the support he is receiving for his efforts from leaders and people of different faiths, including South African bishops.
The council notes the recent deployment of militia to parts of Bulawayo Diocese is reminiscent of Gukurahundi.
About 14 years ago, government-sponsored commandos killed or maimed 20,000 Ndebele-speaking people and rendered thousands homeless in Gukurahundi, in the Matabeleland region of southern Zimbabwe.
Council chairwomen Debra Mabunda said the bishops conference´s lack of support for their “shepherd” could be misconstrued by enemies of the Church as a sign of weakness.
