PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, AUG. 19, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The Knights of Columbus announced a program to help the estimated 800 Haitian children who lost limbs in the Jan. 12 earthquake.

The charitable organization committed to provide $1 million for prosthetic limbs and therapy for all of the children who lost an arm or a leg in the earthquake.

The program, “Hope for Haiti’s Children,” will be administered by Medishare, which operates the University of Miami/Medishare Hospital in Port au Prince, and is the premier children’s medical facility in that country.

The program will provide free prosthetic limbs and physical therapy over the course of two years of treatment.

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson stated, “Almost eight months after the devastating earthquake, we must not forget the children of Haiti, who still need our help, and who continue to be so greatly affected by this disaster.”

He added, “We believe that this program for the injured children of Haiti will not only alleviate their mobility issues in the near term, but also will provide real, concrete hope for their future.”This program is in addition to another initiative under way through which the Knights plan to deliver 2,200 wheelchairs to Haiti.

The organization has already provided 1,000 wheelchairs to injured Haitians, in partnership with the Global Wheelchair Mission.
