Onus Is on Politicians, Says Seattle Prelate

SEATTLE, Washington, JULY 20, 2004 (Zenit.org).- Archbishop Alexander Brunett says he would not automatically deny Communion to pro-abortion Catholic politicians, but put the onus on them not to seek it in the first place.

“Ministers of the Eucharist should not take it upon themselves to deny holy Communion to anyone who presents themselves,” Archbishop Brunett said in a statement Monday, the Seattle Times reported.

Rather, “pro-choice” Catholic politicians should talk to their priest or bishop about their views, he said. Those who continue to publicly oppose Catholic teachings should, as a matter of integrity, refrain from Communion and not force the Church’s hand, he added.
