Auxiliary Named for Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C., NOV. 18, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed another auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington.

Bishop-designate Barry Knestout, 46, will assist Archbishop Donald Wuerl and three other auxiliary bishops.

Barry Knestout was born in Cheverly, Maryland, in 1962, and was ordained a priest in 1989. His brother, Mark, is also a priest for the archdiocese.

The bishop-designate has been working as moderator of the curia and vicar for administration in the archdiocese's central offices. He was responsible for supervising many of the preparations for Benedict XVI’s visit to Washington in April 2008.

His episcopal ordination will take place on Dec. 29.

The Archdiocese of Washington has some 580,000 Catholics served by 626 priests, 247 permanent deacons and 714 religious.
