2 Prelates Named to Doctrine Congregation


VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 22, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI appointed two new members of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, to serve under the leadership of its prefect, Cardinal William Levada.

A Vatican communiqué announced the appointments of Archbishop Walmor Oliveira de Azevedo of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and Bishop Mario del Valle Moronta Rodríguez of San Cristobal, Venezuela.

The former was born in 1954 in Brazil and was ordained a priest in 1977. In 1998, Father Oliveira de Azevedo was ordained a bishop.

Since 2003 he has served as president of the Brazilian bishops' Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The latter, Mario del Valle Moronta Rodríguez, was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1949, and was ordained a priest in 1975. He was ordained a bishop in 1990.
