Ailing Priest Goes From Vietnam Jail to House Arrest

HUE, Vietnam, MARCH 17, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Father Thaddeus Nguyen Van Ly was released from prison at midday Monday and returned to the archbishopric of Hue. Officials cited "humanitarian reasons" for the move, after the priest likely suffered a stroke a few months ago.

Father Ly's transfer to house arrest was reported by Eglises d'Asie, the information agency of the Foreign Missions of Paris.

The 63-year-old priest was released after three year of imprisonment in the Ba Sao penitentiary center, in the province of Ha Nam.

He was serving an eight-year prison sentence, handed down on March 30, 2007. Amnesty International recognizes him as a prisoner of conscience.

In a communiqué published on the Web site of the Archdiocese of Hue, the archbishop and auxiliary bishop, as well as the priests of Hue, celebrated Father Ly's release.
